There’s been some discussion around the gunblogs lately about physical fitness, ranging from Stingray’s highly informative mini-essay and LabRat’s even better follow-up post to pdb’s unintentionally hilarious workout log. I’ve been doing my own little workout routine for the past 3 months, sticking to an every-other-day schedule for a length of time that amazes no one more than myself.
It’s been pretty effective, too. I’m definitely a lot stronger and I feel better in general. I went from huffing and puffing after 15 push-ups to doing 5 sets of 20 without breaking a sweat. Not bad for a skinny nerd who sits in front of a computer upwards of 16 hours a day!
Just this past weekend I discovered another benefit. Despite my last post about shelving the shooting hobby, I found myself at the range for a friend’s bachelor party. Between shooting my own guns and the range’s rental pieces, I noticed that everything kicked less and my sights came back on target significantly faster. I’m not a competition shooter, I have no idea what my “splits” are, but the change was dramatic enough for me to instantly notice the improvement.
If you want to upgrade your shooting performance on the cheap, dig out those dumbbells!
I can enthusiastically recommend NOT catching the creeping crud right before you publicly announce your physical exercise program.
Amen, Brother TD.
A vigorous exercise regimen has benefits in (ahem) other areas, too…
(Chasing after the kids, of course. Why, what did you think I meant???)
