I have a feeling this will be an exercise in masochism.

No, I’m not talking about Squeaky’s upcoming visit.

I’m talking about this:

two recoil lugs

Two recoil lugs. A bad omen.

  1. I’m guessing that’s a 9.3×62, going by your previous post. They’re not bad recoilwise – My Ouch&Ouch was more punishing. more like a big shove, compared to the hard slap of a lightweight magnum.

  2. What’s the history on the rifle? I see the cartridge was used a lot in Africa. Did you end up with something nifty from the past?

  3. While I haven’t any experience with the 9.3×62, I am given to understand that the wallop on the shoulder end is pretty similar to the .405 Win, which I do have experience with. I reckon it is bearable as long as the rifle’s not too light and the stock is well designed.

(In this case, I am glad for the beefy recoil pad on my Encore…)

9.3×62, or as my German friends would insist, 9,3×62 is a rather friendly caliber in the right rifle. Otto Bock from ’05. 1905, that is. Caliber has been called the 30 ’06 of Africa. A viable alternative to calibers in expensive British double rifles, it fits in standard length Mauser ’98 actions. Much cheaper alternative. Handloading is a peach. I get my brass from Huntington’s – 100 for USD $38.98. If you insist, you can form brass from .35 Whelen easiest, followed by 8mm Mauser brass, or 30 ’06 brass with a bit more work.

Popular in Scandinavia for what we call moose. Popular in Canada, especially amongst reloaders, for anything on this continent, out to 150-200 yds.. Used in Africa for everything including elephant, but not wounded elephant under any circumstances. It’s killed probably more cape buffalo than may be alive right now; however, wounded cape buffalo have killed a bunch of hunters armed with 9.3×62. There are a number of African countries that say the minimum caliber allowed for the big 5 is .375, but some make an exception for the 9.3×62 or it’s cousin 9.3×64.

I’m still surprised how reasonable a rifle it is compared to the 9.3×64 Brenneke! Then again, I’m the guy with a lightweight Browning lever action in .450 Marlin. .450 Marlin in all of a 7.5 lb. rifle. It’s my “in case of” rifle, topped with a Leupold VX-III 1.5-5 20mm scope. That rifle kicks harder than the 9.3×62.

  5. If it’s 9.3 x 74, then the very best load in my data produces about 3,300 ft./lbs. of muzzle energy. That’s about 300 more ft./lbs. than a 3 inch, conventional 12 gauge slug. That’s somewhat punishing, however, provided it has a recoil pad that increases the contact surface area, it’s tolerable for multiple shots–as long as you don’t hit yourself in the nose like I once did. Milder loads with heavier bullets fall within the range of a conventional 2.75″ slug.

    If it’s 9.3 x 62 it will be in the 3,100 ft/lb. range with top-end loads.

If you learned to shoot on a gopher gun, chances are you’ll shoulder the weapon so that there is not full coverage of the butt plate, and you will be in pain by the end of the session. Press the butt into your body and don’t let it gain energy from momentum.

And two lugs do not make a bad omen; that indicates good, solid engineering! :o )

  6. My .45/70 doesn’t kick hardly at all when I use the special 150 grain “collarbutton” bullets.]

‘Course I don’t let it get a running start at me either.

  7. Don’s got a point.

    Squeeze that sucker in.

If I can shoot a box of hi-vel 1oz rifled slugs out of Thumper (H&R 12ga lightweight) then I’m certain you can shoot the 9.3 :-D

  8. You’re in for a treat. Bigbore’itis is an expensive disease. Some are able to get an innoculation and remain free of the worst of the symptoms (my brother with his .375 never wanted more). Some get the infection full force and never recover (.375 first, then .416, then a .458, then a .458 Lott, then a .376 Steyr for plinking, now pricing 470 Nitro doubles and trying to decide which kidney to sell).

    Have a blast!

  9. Of course, then we get into big-bore handguns, where the .357Mag and the 10mm are the “little” ones of the collection agglomeration.

  10. and the word “collection” was supposed to be overstruck…
