The Unforgiving Minute
You should never point a loaded gun at anyone. This is not a hard and fast rule, however. A hard and fast rule is that you should never, ever, point an unloaded gun at anyone.

Might as well milk a whole post out of this…

… instead of just a comment.

existingthing and I were discussing proper J-frame holds in comments here. I won’t swear that this is the One True Way, but here’s what I’m doing:

 642 firing grip

Notice I’m keeping my thumb pointed sharply downward, as this keeps it (A) from interfering with the tip of my trigger finger and (B) way the hell away from the cylinder latch. It seems to work well for me. Any input from serious wheelygun shooters would be appreciated.

  1. Much obliged! I had half of my thumb straight, and the forward half bent downward. Next trip to the range, I’ll try again with my thumb all the way down. I was also trying to get the web of my hand up against the frame, which probably explains my sore thumbs.

  2. I don’t know that I’m a “serious” wheelgun shooter, but I like to follow the old-timey advice to keep the web of the hand as high on the gun as possible, which with the Centennial design means maybe a half-inch higher than in your pic. The top of the grip (assuming it’s a rubber grip) ends up with a little bit of the fleshy web poking over it. Cuts perceived recoil for me.

I drop my thumb, as you do, so my weak-hand thumb can lock over it when using two hands.
