The Unforgiving Minute
Some greater interest was at stake; some mightier cause than ever yet the sword had pleaded, or trumpet had proclaimed.

Hmmm…

Somehow, I don’t think you thought your cunning plan all the way through.

So I have this nifty new Smith 642 and I was planning to pocket-carry it, but…

I usually have my left front pocket full of car keys, house keys, cell phone, and flash drive. Right front pocket is for my wallet, with my knife clipped to the edge and my lighter in the watch pocket. My Seecamp rides in a pocket holster inside my back pocket.

This arrangement works for me, but the Smith is a little too fat to comfortably replace the Seecamp in a back pocket. And I don’t really want to relocate any of my front-pocket stuff to make room for the Smith. Nor do I want yet another IWB rig, a belly band or an ankle holster.

This will require further thought. Any advice would be appreciated.

  1. Superglue it to your armpit. If you do need it, you won’t even notice the pain of yanking it free due to the adrenaline rush.

  2. You want to pocket carry, but it won’t work in your back pocket, and you don’t want to move anything out of the pockets it WILL work in? You sound like the people at work whose computers I support… :)

I’m in the market for a pancake holster for mine. I tried a JIT slide, wasn’t particularly pleased, it didn’t tuck the gun in at all. Tried an inexpensive leather pancake–It carried well, but wound up with a bizarre issue. When I first holster the gun, the draw is fine. However, apparently the leather is too soft and after a while the cylinder sort of soaks in and prevents the gun from drawing without strange contortions.

Yes, exactly. Also, I want a rocket car and solid-gold house.

I’m thinking my best option is consolidating all the current front-pocket junk into one pocket and carrying the Smith in the other. Maybe I’ll get one of those dorky little belt holsters for the cellphone.

  4. I had to do some shifting as well. I didn’t really need that notepad or pen in my left-front pocket… I considered moving everything to the left pocket so I could use my right, but I honestly use the stuff in my right pocket so much more than I intend on using my 442, so I figured I’d just keep it in the left pocket and learn to shoot it that way. (I’m already pretty ambidextrous already :)

I went the cheap way, and just used a bit of thin cardboard to break up the outline. Close scrutiny of my Dickies work pants would reveal I have something pocket-shaped in my left front pocket, but not much more. Back pocket kept falling sideways.

  5. Were I you, TD, I’d move the keys from left-front to left-rear pocket, freeing up that pocket for the Smith. I don’t recall exactly when I started doing that, but it works! Once you go back, you’ll never look…er, back, I guess.

  6. As far as pocket carry, I’m lucky–I do most things lefty, but shoot right handed. My regular pocket for keys and such has always been the left side, and right was overflow.

I carry the cellphone in one of those dorky belt holsters, because the one I have to carry for work is large and stupidly programmed-It is a clamshell, but has side buttons that remain active when it is closed. In a pocket, it turns its own ringer down, or hangs up on people before I can get it out.

  7. Oh my God - I came across an incredible Colt 1903 pocket hanmmerless from 1915 in superb condition yesterday for $600 - and I want it so badly.
