A Slight Improvement in Michigan
As of January 7, 2009, Michiganders won’t have to jump through the hoops of our state’s farcical “safety inspection” for handguns, thanks to a trio of bills signed last week by Gov. Granholm.
While the change is an improvement, the bills were, unfortunately, significantly watered down from their original form, which would have done away with the handgun registry entirely. Instead, the registry will be maintained and handguns will still have to be registered, but purchasers can drop off or mail in their registration rather than go to their local PD for a “safety inspection.”
Historically-minded readers might be interested to know that this permit system was originally put in place by the KKK-backed “Public Acts of 1927″, a racist reaction to the case of Dr. Ossian Sweet, a black physician who dared to defend his home from a white mob in Detroit.

Good news.

That bit about Dr. Sweet is an urban legend.
It couldn’t possibly be true — that KKK and racism stuff only happened in the South.
