The Unforgiving Minute
You should never point a loaded gun at anyone. This is not a hard and fast rule, however. A hard and fast rule is that you should never, ever, point an unloaded gun at anyone.

New carry ammo?

After years of hearing Tam sing their praises, I finally ordered up some Georgia Arms ammo for myself. I have 500 rounds of their “Canned Heat” bulk-pack 9mm 115gr FMJ and 50 rounds of their 124gr Gold Dot +P en route.

My usual carry load in my CZ and Hi-Power is the Speer LE 124gr +P Gold Dot, SKU 53617, which usually costs me around $25 for 50 rounds. This is the stuff labeled “Law Enforcement,” but to the best of my knowledge it’s identical to the “civilian,” CCI-branded 124gr +P Gold Dot ammo, SKU 23617, which typically sells for $20/20 rounds. Georgia Arms’ offering should be ballistically identical and sells for $18.75/50. For the non-math-majors, here’s how that breaks down:

Ammo Price per round
CCI 23617 $1.00
Speer 53617 $0.50
Georgia Arms $0.38

Obviously that’s a pretty significant difference. If the Georgia Arms stuff impresses me I’ll switch over to them completely (once my current stock of Speer ammo is exhausted).

Range report to follow.

  1. I’ve shot their stuff for years and never had a bad experience from any caliber. One of the suckiest things about moving up here is that GA Arms won’t be set up at local gun shows…

  2. But even their shipping is not unreasonable…

I haven’t used their JHPs, but my practice ammo in .45 ACP 230gr, 9mm 147gr, and just recently added .40 S&W 180gr has been coming from them since last fall. Good stuff!

  3. I’ve been considering saving up a grand or so and making a road trip to stock up on everything for all calibers I shoot.

  4. How’s their .223? We’ve got a(nother) silly brown-trout law coming down the legislative sewer that has to do with ammo purchasing…

  5. Wow. Their prices are actually still fairly reasonable. A few years ago, I remember people telling me about “Canned Heat” but it was only a few bucks less than case prices for WWB or American Eagle so I never tried it.

Looking forward to that range report. I didn’t know they had match .223 and .308, too. Hmm…
