Slowly the Parts Fall Into Place

This little guy showed up in today’s mail:

sear

It’s one of Jim Miossi’s custom hard sears for my CZ 85 Combat. The projection at the top is the lug for the safety, the bottom one is engaged by the trigger bar to trip the sear, and the long shelf on the right is the sear nose, which mates with the hammer hooks and actually holds the hammer back.

I’m just waiting for a few more odds and ends to arrive before I ship everything off to my friends at Coal Creek Armory for some ’smithing and refinishing. The anticipation is already killing me…

… and then there was one.

Tomorrow morning I polish off my last final of the semester and next week is the switch to summer hours at work. No more homework and no more getting up at 6:45 AM; I think I can deal with that.

So far I’m headed towards an all-A+ report card, though the ‘+’ counts for jack-shit. In any case, I should have ample free time for blogging, working through my “to-do” list, sleeping late, drinking heavily, and maybe picking up a certification or two.

Tops on the to-do list: gotta ship the CZ down to Coal Creek Armory for a few tweaks, replace a slightly squeaky case fan in the new Blade, rework the home LAN to incorporate some kind of network-attached storage (hard drives exist in one of two states: new or full), get the cat neutered.. and oh yeah, go to the Blog Bash!

Celebrating Diversity

TD’s desk (or, to swipe borrow Tam’s phrase, TUM Command Central):

 my desk

On the left is a vintage NeXTstation loaded with NEXTSTEP 3.3. Not actually used for much, but it still works and it’s made of 100% awesome. Next (NeXT?) to it is the new/old Sun Blade 100 running OpenBSD 4.2; it’s actually headless and the monitor is connected to the Power Mac G5 (dual 2 GHz) peeking out from under the desk. Not shown is the Ubuntu Linux-powered Thinkpad T42.
Two remarkable things about this set-up:

  1. All this crap is actually in my bedroom, and…
  2. astonishingly, despite that fact, I have a real live girlfriend.

You’ll note there’s no Windows boxes anywhere; I’m not THAT tolerant.

Book Meme

The rules:

  1. Pick up the nearest book of 123 pages or more. No cheating!
  2. Find page 123.
  3. Find the first five sentences.
  4. Post the next three sentences.
  5. Tag five people.

Mine happened to be “A First Book of ANSI C“:

The entered value is stored in the variable, num1, whose address was passed to scanf(), and the computer is taken out of its paused state. Program execution then proceeds with the next statement, which in Program 3.9 is another call to printf(). This call causes the next message to be displayed.

Congratulations, you’re now a computer programmer.

Mike’s a Lucky Guy

So I have a girlfriend and Breda’s married, but I still think she’s absolutely adorable (and I know Squeaky agrees with me).

Frustration

“I’ve always considered writing the most hateful kind of work. I suspect it’s a bit like fucking, which is only fun for amateurs. Old whores don’t do much giggling.”

- Hunter S. Thompson

Yeah, I’ve got another post languishing in Draft Purgatory. But my friend Tam, who, unlike Yr Obt Svt, is an actual writer, has a (richly deserved) brand-new gig. Congratulations!
