DC v. Heller Amicus Brief Commentary…
Techno-Bleg
So I’ve been watching Squeaky use Google Reader to get her daily blog-fix, and I’m starting to see the appeal. I still do a manual blog-crawl, because (A) I’m stubborn and set in my ways, and (B) I like to show up on everyone’s SiteMeter so they know I’m reading.
That said, I’m looking at feed readers now. All eleventy-hoojillion of them. There are stand-alone applications, plugins for Firefox, web-based services, widgets of all kinds, and direct neural interfaces (though the mind-jack installation looks painful). It’s an embarrassment of riches.
I won’t use Google Reader (I neither have nor want a Google account), and I’d rather not rely on a web-based/hosted service of any kind. So for the moment I’m toying with stand-alone client applications and plugins.
Liferea has the requisite nonsensical UNIX-y name and a simple, clean interface. I could live with it, but there are at least a half-dozen other promising clients I want to try out first.
So… any recommendations for favorite feed reader apps? I should mention I’d like something that’s available (and actually usable!) on Linux and OS X; a Windows version would be a nice bonus. I’ll look at Java options, but (and no offense to any Java developers reading this) Java is a great way to write programs that run everywhere but run well nowhere.
Another option is using the blog itself as a newsreader, a la Kit. The BDP RSS Aggregator plug-in is responsible for that little bit of web-magic.
That still leaves the problem of tickling everyone’s hit counters (and I know many of you are as stats-obsessed as I am). I suppose I could whip up a little shell script to make the appropriate wget requests automagically, but that’s too geeky even for me…
A grand time was had by all.
Squeaky and I met up with Rustmeister for a range session at Brighton Arms this afternoon. Squeaky’s serving up a more exhaustive play-by-play (complete with pictures and video) at her place, while mine will be short and sweet since I’m focusing my energies on important tequila-related activities.
The high points:
First off, Rusty is a true Southern gentleman and a fine shot. He insisted on picking up the tab for me, even after I explained that it obligated him to visit Detroit so I could return the favor.
The new CZ 85 Combat continues to run like a top. My little Seecamp .32 was unhappy with Hornady’s 60-grain XTP load but ran 100% with its preferred (and factory-recommended) Gold Dots.
I surprised the hell out of myself by doing a bit of respectable double-action work with Rusty’s little J-frame snubby (hey, I had to show off for Squeaky). I can see a Model 60 in my future.
M1 carbines are always pure fun. Blackhawks chambered in .30 Carbine are loud, flashy, fill-your-entire-visual-field-with-orange-flame fun.
Kel-Tec .380s were invented by Satan. I put one magazine through Rusty’s before handing it back and telling him, “No offense, but I don’t like you anymore.” Those little things are just plain MEAN.
Shooting with Squeaky is tremendously entertaining because she gets this adorable kid-on-Christmas-morning kind of excitement. You can almost hear a “squee!” after each round.
In conclusion, tequila is delicious.
Apropos of Nothing
Have arrived Memphis.
We’re blogging live from Squeaky‘s living room, awaiting the delivery of some Chinese food.
Flights were alright, but the goddamn baggage apes managed to knock around my suitcase so hard that my Seecamp and CZ-85, which were on opposite sides of a large, thickly padded hard case inside the suitcase, ended up banging against each other. Bastards.
Memphis is like Detroit South. Squeaky is awesome. TD is very, very tired, having been up since 4:30 AM. Updates will follow.
