Truly awesome. I have a slab sitting on my desk at home with a frankenstein OPENSTEP 4.0/4.2 installed. Since I acquired it from someone else, I don't have install disks for it, because it would be really nice if I could upgrade it to a full OPENSTEP 4.2 install :(

I had a laugh when I read that frustration-induced "fuck". I had similar sentiments when my NeXTstation drive died exactly ONE DAY after I finally managed to bypass the login password and actually use it. Now I'm stuck at the same frustrating point of having no way to install the damn OS - even though I have many SCSI hard drives I could use.

Sounds like a bad hard drive, I'd guess. You'll need a replacement drive, an external CD-ROM with appropriate SCSI cable, and an install CD to get it up and running. Have fun :-)

I found the power button. Funny Joke! Hey, the monitor stopped sparking after a while, then I saw a NeXT logo on the screen... the hard drive is spinning, but the boot hasn't got past 'Loading from hard disk...'

There's an occasional bzzzt. every 3-10 seconds. Bad disk sectors maybe?

What should I do NeXT?

I was recently fortunate to inherit a NeXTstation color. The 50-something pound monitor looks in good shape, but I hear occasional sparks when I turn it on.

Now for the slab... How do I turn it on?

ZOMG! That's enough to make me start trolling ebay. Everytime I get ready to dump my massive box o' random SCSI cables (at least 3 each of everything you could imagine) stories like this remind me that I have all of that exotic hardware bits 'n pieces for a reason.

Now I just need something interesting to do with my stack of sparc pizza boxes (one of each - detect a theme?)

I programmed in Objective-C on a grayscale Next pizzabox for two years and then scored a color one. I left programming after I changed companies and had to start working on PC's running VB - it just wasn't fun anymore.

Sigh.

Oh, if you don't mind spending a few bucks, you can get a replacement drive and cable from Black Hole, Inc.
