Spam by the Metric Fuck-Ton

Apparently I’ve reached some tipping point in popularity, since I woke up with 19 spam comments in the moderation queue this morning. By noon, there were another 25 waiting for me. This will not stand, man!

So I set up Akismet to handle my comment spam for me. I want to see how well it works, so consider this a bleg for legit comments…

  1. So you were using nothing before? Sooner or later the bots will follow the links and nail you.

BTW, 44 comment spams is nothing. I get that many for breakfast.

  2. All I did before was manual comment moderation. I’d get maybe one spam comment every other day, so it wasn’t enough of a bother to really annoy me.

Kismet flagged 3 spams right off the bat but let your comment through, so it seems to be working so far.

    Thanks for the comment, btw!

  3. Spam Karma works real well, too. As of this second, over 25K spams eaten on mine. Akismet catches the rest. The trackbackers are the real bastards, though…

  7. I use Akismet on my blog, and so far it has blocked hundreds of spam comments, without letting a single one through. After I installed it, it even seems like the amount of spam attempted has gone down.

  9. I don’t know about you, but I like betting Viagra in my online casino gambling, while trading stocks and taking prescription medications.

(I wonder if this will be caught… maybe I should’ve added a hyperlink for good measure.)

  10. Was wondering if a yahoo mail account would set the filter off?

  14. I use Haloscan and pretty much haven’t had any comment spam in the last several months but that could just be an indicator of my complete irrelevance…

  15. Am wondering what it takes to set Akismet off. Personally I’ve had nothing but good experiences with it, it now having stopped approx 18,000 spam comments from hitting my blog.

Was that too many links? Did this comment get flagged as spam?

    Comment by Mugwug — March 30, 2007 @ 1:44 pm

  16. Mugwug, your comment got sent to the moderation queue by WordPress due to having more than 2 links, but Akismet didn’t flag it as spam.
